Yoga and its Tradition

Yoga as we know it today has been passed down to us through great spiritual traditions that have preserved the teachings for generations for over thousands of years. To understand why we do what we do in yoga practices, it is important for us to be familiar with these spiritual traditions that house the lineage of sages, scriptures, manuals, and philosophies associated to our yoga practices.

These traditions are the original source and the ground from which yoga practices have sprouted. Each yoga practice was propagated in a tradition for a reason underlying their teachings. If you are a yoga practitioner, then it will be immensely helpful to know about the traditions associated with yoga. Yoga traditions are gateways to discover the original pioneers, teachers, scriptures, sciences, and philosophies associated with yoga practices. The knowledge will empower your practice with understanding, purpose, and wisdom. You will gain a connection to the authentic and original spirit of yoga in a personal way.

All yoga systems as we know them today, developed in spiritual traditions derived from the ancient Vedas. The Vedas are the oldest and most authoritative scriptures of Hinduism. Therefore these Yoga traditions are known as Vedic traditions or Vaidhika Dharma in Sanskrit.

Since the Vedas are ancient records revealing the nature of Dharma; the eternal cosmic principles and laws, the Vedic traditions are also known as Sanathana Dharma (Eternal Dharma). Also, it is said that since yoga teachings and practices were transmitted in a great tradition beginning from time immemorial, hence the ‘Eternal Dharma’ or Sanathana Dharma. Vaidhika Dharma or Sanathana Dharma is more commonly referred to as Hinduism in modern times. Some have also called the Sanathana Dharma as the Yoga Dharma (the Yogic paths of Dharma).
