About Rishikesh

Rishikesh is located in Northern India in the state of Uttarakhand. It is considered to be one of the holiest and most spiritual cities of India.

This city has a rich history that goes back hundreds of thousands of years including the enlightenment of Lord Rama. With its rich history, this city attracts thousands of spiritual practitioners, seekers, yogis and those in search of peace and truth from all over the world. Gurus and spiritual masters have meditated, practiced, and roamed these lands for hundreds of thousands of years and as such, this land holds their spiritual energy, vibration, and peace. Upon entering Rishikesh, one can come to feel this energy and it is this same energy that guides yogi and spiritual seekers deeper into their practices. This is the reason why Rishikesh is truly a unique place for those seeking spiritual growth.

It is easy to reach Rishikesh either via New Delhi (capital of India) or Dehradun (capital of Uttarakhand). From New Delhi international airport, Rishikesh can be easily reached via a six-hour drive. Travelers can also fly from New Delhi to Dehradun (50-minute flight) and drive from Dehradun to Rishikesh (1-hour drive). Swaroop Yogic Life can help coordinate any transportation needs for students.

Things to do in Rishikesh

Yoga Festival

The International Day of Yoga is on the 21st of June every day. Rishikesh, as the birthplace of yoga is a wonderful place for the celebration of International Day of Yoga. On the 21st of June, ashrams and temples around Rishikesh hold different festivals in celebration of the International Day of Yoga. At Swaroop Yogic Life, we also organize many activities in celebration of this special day.

In Rishikesh, starting from March 1st to March 7th, The International Yoga festival takes place. During this time, many yoga teachers, yoga practitioners, and spiritual gurus from around the world come to visit Rishikesh and participate in the International Yoga festival to be a part of this beautiful experience. This festival is organized by the government of Uttarakhand in collaboration with other organizations in Rishikesh. This is an opportunity to see all different types of yoga and for all yoga practitioners to come together in one place at the same time. This is definitely an incredible opportunity and we highly recommend all yogis to come and experience this at least once in their lifetime.

Ganga Arti

As we know, “Jal he Jeevan” means “the water is the life” or “the life comes from life,” or “the water is the source of life.” According to Hindu tradition, we worship the holy Ganga River as the source of life. Additionally, in Hindu tradition, the title of mother is always given to the source of life. This is the reason for giving the name the Holy Ganga River Ma Ganga for this river. We celebrate the Holy Ganga River through the performance of the Ganga Arti (Arti = worship) every evening at sunset 365 days a year. Ganga Arti takes place at several different locations throughout India including Varanashi (holy city in the state Uttar Pradesh) and Haridwar (holy city in the state of Uttarakhand. In Rishikesh, it is best to observe Ganga Arti at Parmarth Niketan and near Lakshman Jhula. When you are in Rishikesh, we highly recommend experiencing Ganga Arti at either one of the two locations. Many people gather from around the world near the Ganga River to observe and experience the Ganga Arti. The event lasts for 1 hour and starts with chanting and singing of various mantras in Sanskrit. The ceremony ends with the lighting of oil lamps in worship of Ma Ganga.

River Rafting

River rafting is an exciting and adventurous activity in Rishikesh. River rafting season starts from mid-September to the end of June. River rafting is closed during the raining season. The peak time for river rafting is in March, April and May. You can also enjoy it in the months of October, November, December and January but you will find that the water is very cold. There are three different tracks for river rafting. The first track is 9 km (5.6 miles). It starts from Brahampuri and ends at Lakshman Jhula. This track is good for beginners to gain confidence.

The second track is 16 km (around 10 miles). It starts from Sivpuri and ends at Lakshman Jhula. This is for intermediate river rafters. There are many breathtaking moments on this track and is very enjoyable.

The third track is 25 km (or around 15.5 miles). It starts Marine Drive and ends at Lakshman Jhula. This track is extremely thrilling and for advanced river rafters. During the entire track, you will experience many adventurous and breathtaking moments and see many beautiful views of the mountains and rivers.
